I’ve been reading Larry Benson’s (famed editor of the Riverside Chaucer) book, Art and Tradition in Sir Gawain in the Green Knight in preparation for my online intensive class on Sir Gawain. What I love about Benson’s work is how he roots the entire thing in the medieval tradition and helps us to read the poem the way that the original audience would . Biography of the Poet Extremely little is known about the origins of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. The poem survived the Middle Ages in a single manuscript that was preserved because it fell into the hands of a book collector, Sir Robert Cotton, whose collections were later donated to the British Museum.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight translated by Simon Armitage pp, Faber, £ A huge knight, green from top to toe, rides into Camelot at Christmas. The anonymous poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is considered one of the masterpieces of Middle English literature. It was composed in the West Midlands region of Britain at the end of the 14th century, but was copied out at the beginning of the 15th. The poem only survives in this single manuscript at the British Library – Cotton MS Nero A X.

The essays collected here on the Gawain-Poet offer stimulating introductions to Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl, Cleanness and Patience, providing both information and original analysis. Topics include theories of authorship; the historical and social background to the poems, with individual sections on particularly important features within them; gender roles in the 5/5(1).   This book treats separately all four poems: Pearl, Cleanness, Patience and Sir Gawain. There are also chapters on: the history of the poems and their rediscovery; alliterative verse; and what little is known about the author. The main emphasis falls on interpretation, and on such Pages:

He makes a close analysis of each poem, considering the four not so much in their historical context as for their immediate poetic effect.

The Gawain Poet also gives us a bonus in this romance: a unique poetic stanza form called the "bob and wheel." It's five short lines that rhyme according to an ABABA, pattern. And the first of those lines is way short—only two syllables).
